We had a great meeting Monday night! Thanks to all who joined us and for everyone that is working so hard to help make the August 28 Oldham County Touched Twice clinic a success. Our next meeting will be held on Monday, June 28, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the LaGrange Community Center (next to DeHaven Baptist Church and the LaGrange Town Hall on West Jefferson Street). Hope everyone can join us -- and bring one or two people!
Here are the highlights from the meeting (along with our needs):
(1) DENTAL: Dr. Sara Cummins and her team have expressed an interest in coordinating the dental portion of the clinic. We have six dentists who have committed to serve at the clinic. Any dental assistants or hygienists out there? Until we have a coordinator in place, please direct any questions or additional volunteers to me.
(2) EVANGELISM: Chris Platt of Crestwood Baptist Church will host evangelism training approximately one week prior to the clinic. Date and time TBA. Rick Davidson of LaGrange Baptist Church is also working with this team. Chris and Rick are recruiting members for the evangelism team. If interested in serving with this team, please contact Chris at chris@crestwoodbaptist.org.
(3) FOOD PANTRY: Phos Church (Meredith Lewis -- meredith@phoschurch.com) has volunteered to coordinate and help staff the food pantry. CHURCHES, PLEASE BEGIN COLLECTING NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS FOR THE FOOD PANTRY.
(4) MEAL PLANNING/PREP: Kara Vonderheide is looking for people to join her team. We need cooks (weeks leading up to clinic and clinic day), people to help solicit food and money donations and a group to take on desserts for the clinic (sugar and sugar free options). If can help in any way with this team, please contact Kara at vondermail@insightbb.com.
(5) CLOTHES CLOSET: Monique Baker is actively seeking donations. If you have contacts with goodwill stores, clothes closets, etc., know of other sources of clothing - or would like to join this team, please contact Monique at monique_baker@hotmail.com. CHURCHES, PLEASE BEGIN COLLECTING CLOTHING (ALL SEASONS).
(6) CLINIC GATEKEEPER/PARKING ISSUES: Paul Winstead and Brian Baker are investigating parking/shuttle options for clinic day. We need 1-2 vans to transport volunteers to the clinic site and a nearby parking lot for our volunteers. If you know of any available options around LaGrange, please contact Paul (paul.winstead@gmail.com) or Brian (brian@baker-bohnert.com). Also, please let them know if you have access to walkie-talkies for day of clinic (could use up to 20).
(7) MEDICAL/PHARMACY CLINIC: Barbara Mason has expressed interest in acting as the coordinator for the medical clinic, and Cynthia Stafford and Dede McIntyre with the LaGrange HDB Clinic (a co-promoter of this Oldham County Touched Twice Clinic) are providing vital assistance with the medical clinic. Teresa Gamsky is gathering supplies, but we also need basic medications for our pharmacy. We have 6-8 nurses that have committed. Although only one doctor has committed thus far, I recently learned that Dr. Greg Robson (Oldham County Pediatrics) has spoken with 3-5 doctors that are interested in serving with the clinic! Hope to have more details soon. Until we have a coordinator in place, please direct any questions or additional volunteers to me.
(8) CHIROPRACTIC: We have a chiropractor! Dr. Mark Hines has agreed to provide chiropractic services at the clinic.
(9) DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS: An Occupational Therapist has expressed an interest in providing developmental screenings, which is great! If anyone knows of other therapists that might be interested, please let me know.
(10) VISION: We do not have vision testing equipment, an ophthalmologist or an optical coordinator. We would love to offer this service, but we need to find the volunteers. I know that Debbie Clark is checking with Dr. Blair in LaGrange. If anyone has any leads, please let me know.
(11) OUTREACH: Sheila Koontz has contacted many area churches regarding the clinic. Randy Jones, Director of Missions at the Oldham-Trimble Baptist Association is prepared to get a team involved in the effort of contacting other Baptist Churches in the area. Sheila has also contacted some folks from North Oldham Baptist Church. Rick Davidson, Executive Pastor at LaGrange Baptist Church (rdavidson@lagrangebaptist.com) plans to provide us with some additional contact information, including contacts with the Oldham Ministerial Association. We now have representatives from Calvary, Campbellsburg Baptist Church, Crestwood Baptist Church, DeHaven Baptist Church, LaGrange Baptist Church, North Oldham Baptist Church, Northeast Christian Church, Phos Church and Southeast Christian Church (miss anyone?) involved in the planning for this clinic. However, we truly want for this to be a community-wide event. If you would like to help with reaching out to other area churches to get involved, please contact Sheila at sfkoontz@bellsouth.net.
(12) PRAYER: Clint Elliott is assembling a prayer team, with the focus of covering the planning and this clinic in prayer. We truly want God to be the center of everything we do in this. If you would like to participate in the prayer team - which will engage in regular prayer for the clinic and those we will serve -- please contact Clint at celliott694@students.sbts.edu.
(13) PUBLICITY: Dan Vonderheide is updating our website (www.oldhamclinic.com) to provide more information and to allow for more registration information to be inputed. Please direct anyone you know to www.oldhamclinic.com or to www.touchedtwiceunited.org (search for our August 28 clinic) to register for this clinic. We would like to know what team/area folks would like to work with. Dan is also working on promoting the clinic through media outlets and is looking into volunteer shirts. If anyone would like to help with any or all, contact Dan at dan@louisville.com.
(14) REGISTRATION: The registration team, lead by Mary White, Pam Lunsford and Cindy White, has 8-9 members on the registration team, but could use more. If you would like to help our volunteers and guests get registered on clinic day, please contact them at cindywhite@insightbb.com.
(15) SPA: Lorie Elliott is working on many great services for our spa, including facials, manicures and haircuts. Teresa Black is helping Lorie on this team - and a couple of hairdressers, etc., have volunteered to help with this aspect of the clinic, but they could use additional help. If interested, contact Lorie at lorie@pinnacletitleonline.com.
(16) VOLUNTEERS: We need 250-300-plus "advocates" to escort the guests through the clinic experience. CHURCHES, PLEASE APPOINT A REPRESENTATIVE TO PROMOTE THE CLINIC AT YOUR CHURCH AND TO RECRUIT ADVOCATES. We would like our advocates to be representative of all the churches involved. If anyone knows of someone interested in participating as an advocate, please direct them to www.oldhamclinic.com. Further, if someone is interested in helping to direct the pairing of advocates with guests on clinic day, please contact Shawna White (shawna.white@insightbb.com) or me.
(17) INTERPRETERS: We only have a handful of interpreters and need many more. We would like each area of the clinic to be staffed with at least one interpreter. In addition to interpreters from the HDB Clinic, the Wilsons and Monica Deskins, I understand that we may be able to contact additional interpreters through Susan Arnold and Randy Jones. Please let me know their contact information and if anyone knows of any other Spanish-speaking folks who might be available to help. ALSO, IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO COORDINATE THE INTERPRETERS ON CLINIC DAY, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
(18) FAMILY PICTURES: Some have expressed an interest in taking family pictures on clinic day, but we need printers, etc., so that the guests can leave with their pictures. If you know of anyone that has any necessary equipment and/or anyone that would like to coordinate this aspect of the clinic, please let me know.
(19) BIBLES: We would like to provide Bibles to every guest that comes through the clinic - preferably NIV, 400 in English and 100 in Spanish. I know that Rick Davidson of LaGrange Baptist Church is going to contact the Gideons – and that others are looking into available options and that Raymond Wilson has offered help, as well. If anyone knows of free or inexpensive options, please let me know.
(20) HYGIENE ITEMS: We would also like to provide hygiene items to our guests. Please let me know if anyone has any resources, leads on that front. Also, anyone to coordinate this effort?
(21) FACILITIES: DeHaven Baptist has graciously allowed us to use their church building on clinic day. We plan to flow the clinic through the Community Center and DeHaven. More details to follow. Hopefully, we will be in a position to discuss specifics regarding the flow of the clinic during our next meeting.
(22) ENTERTAINMENT: Bernie Koontz is leading our entertainment team, which will provide music, etc. in the sanctuary while the guests wait to enter the clinic. If you have any interest in helping with this team or in participating, please contact Bernie at hbkoontz@bellsouth.net. The “entertainment” provides one of the first impressions for the guests and is important to put the guests at ease – and even can foster spiritual conversations.
(23) CHILD CARE: Phos Church has volunteered to help with organizing and operating the child care/VBS-type area for the clinic. If anyone has access to inflatables, has ideas or would like to help, please contact Meredith Lewis at meredith@phoschurch.com.
That about covers it for now. Please keep praying, recruiting and planning!
Thanks for your heart to serve in Christ's name!
Ben
